Chocolate Covered Frozen Bananas

While I am sure that these exist in other places, I discovered these goodies on our last family vacation to Disney World.  I found them in one of the snack carts located throughout the parks, and these became my most favorite way to spend the snack points from our dining plan.  It has been five years since that vacation, and yet these have stayed with me.   They are bananas covered in chocolate.  Need I say more?  They make a great snack, and they are both nutritious and delicious, which is always music to my ears.

  • 4 medium bananas
  • 8 popsicle sticks
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp canola oil


Peel bananas and cut each in half.

Starting at the cut end, push a popsicle stick into each banana lengthwise.

When all bananas have been prepared, pour the chocolate chips and oil into bowl or glass. 

Place the chips in the microwave and begin to melt.  First, microwave for about 30 seconds, and stir.  Then, put the chips in the microwave for another 15 seconds, then stir.  Repeat this process until the chips have all but melted entirely.  Then, stir the chips thoroughly and the remainder will melt from the heat in the cup.  Here are some tips and words of caution:

  • The chocolate will burn very easily, and will turn into a crumbly mess.  Do not be tempted to microwave the chips for longer periods of time.  Keep microwaving for 15 minute intervals and checking every time.
  • Do not skip the stirring process.  The chips will look like chips, even when melted, unless you touch them.  Stirring them distributes the heat and will finish the melting process.  

Dip the bananas into the melted chocolate.  You will have some chocolate left over at the end, so you may want to plan on dipping some more fruit.

Place the chocolate covered bananas on a tray or baking sheet lined with parchment paper to set.  You can leave these out, or put them in the refrigerator to speed up the process.

When the chocolate is set, cover with plastic wrap and place in freezer overnight.
